The Role
Reporting to the Divisional Supply Chain Director, you will lead a team of Regional Fleet Managers and be accountable for the development, compliance and optimisation of the fleet of vehicles within our General Merchanting business.  

You and your team will support our Branch Managers in all distribution related compliance requirements and development opportunities, showcasing distribution performance through key performance metrics and continuous improvement.  You will hold accountability for transport compliance and performance and through a suite of end to end measures, you’ll identify opportunities within the Division to improve transport efficiency and reduce costs whilst improving service levels.  Owning and delivering supply chain transport change programs and projects across our General Merchanting division, you will lead strategic and tactical change initiatives that will result in a step-change in performance.

As a truly commercially focused, highly experienced and inspiring Head of Fleet you will be able to demonstrate your strategic vision and ability to drive ambitious transport development plans through your proven people and influencing skills.  Utilising your exceptional communication skills, you will have the ability to engage with a diverse set of stakeholders and be able to make informed and rounded decisions.

You will also have experience working through large and complex change programmes, with an understanding of the challenges faced when taking a team through a change initiative - therefore exceptional leadership skills are a must!

This role is based at our Northampton Support Centre but covers the whole of the Travis Perkins General Merchanting business across the UK - some 800+ branches and a fleet of in excess of 1400 HGVs.  This is an exciting time to join the General Merchanting team as we embark on our modernisation programme to equip our business and colleagues with new capabilities, innovation and technology. 

Principle Accountabilities
  • To reduce and minimise all elements of divisional distribution-related costs year on year, including fuel usage, driver hours and damage from driver accidents. 
  • Ensure ‘route planning’ is deployed across the business and supported by an effective "on time, in full" metric that drives performance.
  • Use your expertise through a network of distribution specialists in each of the business units to ensure that branch managers have sufficient support to implement improvement projects and comply with Group distribution requirements.
  • Develop strong and influential relationships within the Divisional leadership, management and central function teams to optimise service delivery to the Business Unit.
  • Support the Divisional Supply Chain Director in strategic and tactical planning, providing advice and guidance to deliver key improvements and efficiencies.
  • Through effective communication, engagement and understanding of Compliance requirements, ensure the General Merchanting division is run in accordance with Company Policy, industry best practice and legislative requirements and ensure effective methods are in place for the monitoring and reporting of transport compliance.
  • Accountable for the delivery of the Division's’ capital programme for Commercial Vehicles and Mobile plant.
  • Develop and drive improvements to end-to-end Supply Chain processes that are customer-centric and follow an optimal flow, maximising cost returns for the business.  
  • To lead and motivate a team of Fleet and Development Managers to ensure the best possible outcome to improve the Divisional performance.  You will take a proactive role in their performance and career management, ensuring adequate succession plans exist for key roles.
